Transport & logistics Usage scenario

Delivery tracking with a driver app that works offline

An offline driver app, a delivery map for the office and a tracking link sent to the customer by SMS or WhatsApp.

01

Project overview

This scenario illustrates what we build; it is not a client reference.

This scenario shows how a transporter with 12 trucks can replace phone calls and the notebook with a driver app, a map for the office and a tracking link sent to the customer by SMS or WhatsApp. The app records each step even without network and sends everything once the connection is back.

02

Client challenges & requirements

A transporter in Conakry runs 12 trucks and around 40 deliveries a day. In the morning the dispatcher writes the routes in a notebook. During the day he calls each driver to find out where they are, and customers call the office to ask when their goods will arrive.

When a driver does not answer, nobody knows whether the truck is on its way, broken down or already gone. Signed delivery notes come back in the evening, sometimes the next day, and a customer may dispute a delivery with no way to prove it.

Main objectives

Give each driver the list of their deliveries on their phone, usable without network

Show the office on a map where each delivery stands, without calling

Notify the customer by SMS or WhatsApp at each step, with a tracking link

Keep a proof of delivery (photo, signature, time, position) for each parcel

Project solution

  1. We start small

A driver app in Flutter, a web interface for the office in Laravel, a PostgreSQL database. The driver opens the day's route, moves each delivery to "loaded", "on the way", "delivered" or "absent", takes a photo and gets a signature on the screen. If the network drops, everything is stored on the phone and sent as soon as the connection is back.

  2. The office sees trucks and deliveries on an OpenStreetMap map and reassigns a delivery in two clicks. At each status change, the customer receives an SMS or a WhatsApp message (through the WhatsApp Business API) with a tracking link that opens without any app. A maintenance contract then covers updates, support and the small changes requested by the drivers.

04

Indicators to track

  • Number of calls received by the office per day
  • Share of deliveries with a complete proof
  • Delay between the delivery and its confirmation at the office
  • Number of customer disputes on deliveries

Frequently asked questions

The app keeps everything on the phone: statuses, photos, signatures, position. As soon as the network is back, it sends the data to the office in order. The driver has nothing to redo.

No. The app is built for entry-level Android phones and uses little data. If a driver has no phone, the company can equip one per truck.

No. They receive an SMS or a WhatsApp message with a link. The link opens a light page showing the delivery status and the estimated arrival time.
